While still illegal at the federal level, states have been legalizing cannabis for medicinal, adult (recreational), or both uses. The science on cannabis, its effects on the body and brain, and determining workplace impairment have not kept up. This workshop will explore the issues of:

  • A little history of cannabis
  • Cannabis sativa: “plant of a thousand and one molecules”
  • Metabolism and effects of cannabis
  • Occupational safety and health implications

Occupational Asthma

If an adult experiences new-onset asthma, it is recommended that occupational asthma be suspected. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough, and sputum production -- similar to asthma that is not work-related. For some sensitizers and workers, symptoms may occur upon first exposures to the sensitizer; for others, symptoms may not appear until after a latency period. Latency could range from weeks to years after the first exposure.

Part of the Online Labor Studies Program this course surveys the major areas of the law as it applies to workers and unions in the private sector. Students will concentrate on major provisions of the NLRB, examining how NLRB and Federal Courts have interpreted the national labor laws.
