Background:
- In 2013, elected as Brooklyn Borough President (currently serving 2nd term), has advocated for the construction of more affordable housing units, created the Brooklyn Pipeline to provide learning and training to public school students
- Served as a law enforcement officer for 22 years retiring at the rank of captain.
- Previously elected to four terms in the New York State Senate representing the 20th state senate district.
- Co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, a group that advocated for solutions to racial profiling and police brutality.
Work Related Proposals (gleaned from Candidate website):
- Expand the Relocation Employment Assistance Program (REAP), which provides a tax credit per employee to businesses that relocate to the city. Expanding REAP will help attract businesses and jobs to the city.
- Create “tax-free Tuesdays” to help small businesses by implementing a weekly sales tax holiday on goods purchased during in-person shopping.
- To keep the service industry afloat, suspend property tax debt interest for two years to provide relief for the hotel industry, and split the salary for food service workers between restaurant owners and the City.
- As part of recovery plan for post-pandemic NYC, invest in green technology and infrastructure by upgrading and transitioning the electric grid to rely on wind and building wind turbines on properties such as the SBMT, the Red Hook Container Terminal, Port Richmond, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
- Build new affordable housing by allowing private office buildings and hotels to become housing, empowering Community Development Corporations, improving rent subsidies by increasing FHEPS housing vouchers’ value, and offering City-owned property to non-profit land trusts to create affordable housing.
