  • From 1993-2003 served as executive director of the Fifth Action Committee that develops affordable housing.
  • Director of Pratt Center for Community Development from 2003-2009.
  • Elected to the New York City Council in 2009 representing district 39 and co-founded the council’s progressive caucus.

Work Related Proposals (gleaned from Candidate website):

  • Supports an NYC Essential Workers Bill of Rights that includes paid sick leave for gig workers, protection from firing without just cause, pay premiums for essential workers, and reclassification of gig workers to employees.
  • To prevent worker exploitation, create an “Exploitative Employer Wall of Shame” that names the most exploitative and accident-prone companies to hold companies accountable for the violation of workers’ rights.
  • Expand local and community hiring by supporting efforts by the City and Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York (BCTC) to prioritize low-income New Yorkers and NYCHA residents for construction jobs through Project Labor Agreements (PLAs).
  • Support M/WBEs by ensuring that contractors are paid on time
  • To utilize funds in Economically Targeted Investments (ETIs), focus on sustainability and renewable energy, with an emphasis on those that create NYC jobs. To help retrofit buildings, explore the creation of climate loans through a dedicated fund to help bring buildings up to sustainability standards.
