Kenneth Tsz Fung NG is a doctoral candidate in Government and Public Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He earned his undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from the University of Hong Kong and his Master of Law degree in Labor Sociology from Peking University.  He is the recipient of the Fulbright - RGC Hong Kong Research Scholar Award for the 2015/16 academic year, which has enabled him to spend six months at the ILR School with Dr. Eli Friedman. Kenneth’s research centers around civil society, industrial relations and labor activism in mainland China. Apart from academic pursuits, Kenneth is now serving as an executive committee member for the Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM), a Hong Kong based NGO focusing on the issue of corporate responsibility and labor standards in mainland China.

Current Research at ILR

Under the auspices of the Department of International and Comparative Labor, Mr. NG will work on a doctoral project on non-union labor organizations in mainland China. In particular, he will attempt to address two research questions regarding labor NGO development in the country, namely: (i) why labor NGOs, contrary to other social organizations like environmental groups, prospered in the Pearl River Delta region, while stagnating in the Yangtze River Delta region; and (ii) to what extent and in what way do the activities of labor NGOs shape workers’ resistance and collective action in the two regions.
