Offshore Wind Training Delivered to Communications Workers of America (CWA) Members across New York State

On Thursday, September 2nd, the Worker Institute’s Labor Leading on Climate Initiative delivered its latest “Climate Jobs and Offshore Wind (OSW)” training in partnership with Climate Jobs NY.

Worker Institute Extension Associate Zach Cunningham worked with leaders from the Communications Workers of America (CWA) District One to deliver the training to roughly 20 members throughout New York State. Participants joined from Buffalo, Rochester, Schenectady, New York City, and Long Island.

CWA members learned about current offshore wind projects in New York, and they heard from Christian Gonzalez, a member of the International Union of Electrical Workers (IUE-CWA), about ongoing efforts to bring wind turbine manufacturing jobs to the General Electric plant in Schenectady. Participants also discussed at length their personal experiences with climate change. The training took place the day after record rainfalls brought on by Hurricane Ida, and the topic was on the minds of everyone present.

To date, nearly 200 union members from across New York State have participated in similar trainings. Later this month, Climate Jobs NY and the Worker Institute will lead a training with members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
