The ILR School's Ileen DeVault, in collaboration with Maria Figueroa, Fred Kotler, Michael Maffie, and John Wu, wrote a report examining on-demand platform workers in New York State. The report highlights the complexities that arise with this workforce. It is difficult to get an accurate workforce count; they face low and unstable earnings, a lack of benefits and workplace hazards.
