This project looks at the DGB and various trade unions (IG Metall, IG BCE, IB BAU, and ver.di). This study looks at how these organizations have handled the treatment and integration of foreign and migrant workers in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The roles of the umbrella organization, the DGB, and the individual unions have continuously morphed as the national sentiment, policy, and economy changed. Until 1998, the dominant attitude toward migrant workers was reflected by the proclamation: “Germany is not a land of immigrants.”
Today, the integration of migrants is a dominant and important political and social issue. In this case study, the reader sees how these changes are reflected by labor policy and labor and union organizations, and the many movements to organize foreign workers and the clear and firm anti-discrimination doctrines that protect them.
