ILR Alumni Affairs and Development

Our strong alumni community is important to ILR. Alumni are engaged in the work of ILR in meaningful ways by offering advice to deans and faculty, hosting ILR student interns, recruiting graduating seniors, guest lecturing in courses, sharing career insights as panelists, hosting alumni networking events, and as loyal donors whose contributions advance ILR. The ILR Office of Alumni Affairs and Development helps facilitate activities like those described above and drives fundraising activity for the ILR School.

Career field: Nonprofit
Location: Ithaca, NY
On site or remote: Student may work on site or remotely
Job opportunity: WISP Project DescriptionAnnual Fund Project Approximate time commitment (10hrs/week)The intern will assist Haley Singer with an audience segmentation project based on prior giving from alumni, parents and friends of ILR, and other categories such as high potential lapsed donors, and prospective donors highly advanced in their fields. This can be informed by the Cornell Annual Fund levels already assigned, but would involve more expansive reporting analysis and with an eye toward ILR specific engagement. Once appropriate segments are established, the intern will work with the populations in these segments, and potentially career or degree focused sub-segments, using high impact mass communication, videos, etc. likely to facilitate interest in ILR. In the highest segment, the intern will design and deliver personalized communication with likely donors. This is important so that when the annual fund solicitation is extended to the donor, it isn’t the only time they have heard from an ILR AA&D staff person in a personalized way. These efforts generate helpful feedback and reveal interests previously unknown to the AA&D program. The student would be trained on basic indicators of capacity and inclination and invited to present names on a bi-weekly basis that might be deserving of ongoing higher level interaction. Communication for the high potential annual fund donor segment could include, but is not limited to, current updates, interesting research, pictures or videos of spaces, classes, interesting things other alumni have done, other alumni gifts and exciting developments at ILR. The intern will work in concert with Haley and her existing plans for high touch outreach to these groups. A successful intern will also work hard to integrate this messaging into the social media strategy and help increase traffic to these sites. This last task is particularly important so that when the internship ends, there will be a lasting and measurable impact on alumni engagement. The intern will also be involved in providing engaging and informative content to social media appropriate to raise friends and eventual annual supporters. The intern will assist in designing the year-end appeal. Deliverables: The intern will document their general activities in a Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) which may be used in the future for other student workers or interns. In addition, they will keep an electronic folder of all communications and create a document tracking meaningful interactions with prospective annual fund donors. The year-end appeal will reflect the inputs of the intern. Stewardship Project Approximate intern time commitment (10hrs/week)The intern will assist Haley Singer in organizing the master database of all of our restricted gifts & endowments. He/she will track and enter important stewardship instructions like 1) stewarding office (ILRAA&D, OCS, Donor relations, etc) 2) staff responsible for stewardship 2) procedure 3) examples of previous stewardship. For racked prospects (at a minimum) the intern will also ensure that pertinent stewardship information is entered into PeopleSoft. For funds that are in need of stewardship, the intern will assess what kind of stewardship may be needed based on the nature of the gift (space, deans discretionary/excellence funds, professorship, research fund, etc) and the characteristics of the donor or surviving family members, and will make recommendations. The intern will also create some letter templates for common categories such as professorships, dean’s excellence funds, international travel grants, etc, and use them to write letters for those funds this year. It is expected that the intern will use familiar and researched experiences with faculty, programs, classes etc., when appropriate and work with other students to create testimonials and other media that can be included in stewardship communications. The objective would be to design tailored communication that reaches beyond what is achievable by mass communication. It is our belief that behind many of these under-stewarded funds are donors who would be more engaged if they knew how much their gifts meant to the School. This activity will help satisfy annual mandatory stewardship requirements for donors with 100K giving and above, but will also be helpful in creating a repeatable plan for broad based stewardship in ILR overall. Deliverables: Master database of stewardship tracking, standard operating procedure discussing how stewardship was designed, prioritized and delivered, and an electronic collection of templates and actual communications sent. MILR Fellowship Campaign (Ongoing as needed/available)If the intern has the time, he/she could assist with the MILR Fellowship campaign. Activities would be similar to the Annual Fund project with respect to segmentation and personalizing asks via mass outreach. In addition, the intern would help facilitate peer-to-peer fundraising via social media.
Minimum qualifications: Required: Junior or Senior ILR student with a demonstrated interest in non-profit management and development.
Number of opportunities: 1
Compensation: $15/hr
Begin and end dates: Entire winter break is possible with the exception of the December university holidays.
