Why did you choose the MILR program?

The MILR program was the clear choice. Looking at the ILR alumni network, there are so many former MILR’s and BSILR’s in executive leadership positions across the HR industry. The alumni network is not only an incredible resource to help connect me to established HR professionals, but it is also a representation of how successful those who pursue the MILR degree can be. I would also be remiss if I don’t credit my decision to enroll at Cornell to the former Western Michigan University students who have come through this program, as it showed how well my undergraduate education prepared me for this.

What is your favorite part of the MILR program?

My favorite part about the MILR program is how it emphasizes collaboration over competition. Yes, there are things we compete against each other for, but we understand that we will all be more successful if we support each other through our highs and lows. Programs like this are truly one of a kind.

What is your favorite class?

So far, my favorite class has been Organizational Behavior with Professor Brian Lucas. It is a phenomenal look at human behavior within the contexts of teams and organizations, and Brian really knows how to captivate the class.

What is your favorite part of Ithaca?

The best part about living in Ithaca is the direct access to nature. I’m sure if you ask any Cornellian, they’d say the same thing. You don’t even have to leave campus to see beautiful waterfalls and gorges that would normally take a significant hike to find anywhere else.

What advice would you give a prospective student?

Just take the first step. If you are anything like me, you can probably relate to being overwhelmed by how difficult the path to the top of the mountain looks. It can be paralyzing to look at where you are now and see how far you are from who you want to be. The best thing you can do is take one step at a time. Deciding to come to Cornell was the most profound decision I have made so far, but I have to remember that it all started when I took that first step and simply clicked “Submit Application.” The rest will fall into place.
