"Chief HR Officer" Book a comprehensive look at the evolving CHRO role.

The Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies (CAHRS) is proud to announce the publication of the newest and most comprehensive book about the evolving chief human resource officer (CHRO) role—The Chief HR Officer: Defining the New Role of Human Resource Leaders. The book, co-published by Jossey-Bass and SHRM in April 2011, is a product of the collaboration between the ILR School’s Patrick M. Wright, the William J. Conaty Professor of Strategic Human Resources, CAHRS, and five successful CHROs and top HR academics.

Jossey-Bass describes The Chief HR Officer as providing “real world insight and pragmatic suggestions that will improve the aspiring CHRO's chances for success in one of the most demanding executive roles in the corporate world today.”

The idea for the book was sparked by the executive presentations given as part of a unique CAHRS executive development program for aspiring CHROs—The Modern CHRO Role & Strategies for Success. Wright, creator and faculty leader of the Modern CHRO program, and Dave Pace, former head of HR at Starbucks and current CHRO at Outback Steakhouse, Inc. (OSI), realized that the content was excellent and could provide expert guidance to HR professionals outside the program as well.

Along with content from some of the country's most successful CHROs and top academics in the field, The Chief HR Officer also highlights results from the past three years of CAHRS-sponsored research by Wright on characteristics of today’s CHROs in Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies, and how they allocate their time as HR leaders.

Wright notes that the book is truly an academic-practitioner partnership—across both companies and universities. The bulk of its chapters are authored by CHROs or former CHROs at CAHRS partner companies. These include, in part, Randy MacDonald (IBM), Eva Sage-Gavin (Gap Inc.), L. Kevin Cox (American Express), Mirian M. Graddick-Weir (Merck), Mike Davis (General Mills), Ian Ziskin (former Northrop-Grumman), Laurie Siegel (Tyco International), Elease Wright (Aetna), Hugh Mitchell (Shell), Paul McKinnon (Citi), and Pamela Kimmet (Coca-Cola Enterprises).

In addition, one of the book’s editors (John Boudreau) contributed content alongside his colleague Ed Lawler from the University of Southern California’s Center for Effective Organizations (CEO). Dave Ulrich, professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and founder of the RBL Group, also contributed his insights to the book.

The Chief HR Officer is sponsored by the National Academy of Human Resources (NAHR), and is available for purchase on Amazon.com and through the SHRM website.
