Analyzing an Industry
Art Wheaton will represent the United States in the International Labour Organization's Asian Regional Workshop for the Automotive Industry.
The event will be held Monday through Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan.
Wheaton, a senior Extension associate based in ILR's Buffalo office, is an expert on the domestic and international automotive industry.
Co-author of the Oxford University Press book entitled "Knowledge-Driven Work: Unexpected Lessons from Japanese and United States Work Practices," Wheaton has developed education and training programs for the United Auto Workers, General Motors, Ford Motor Company and other organizations.
The Tokyo event provides a forum to analyze automotive industry employment relationships, rights at work and social protection, according to the International Labour Organization. It will also focus on the impact of the global economic crisis.
Participants include government, employer and worker representatives from Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.
Wheaton will discuss labor relations in the American auto industry and will participate in conference discussions on the Asian automotive industry. The event, he said, "is a learning experience intended to assist policymakers, automakers and labor organizations in these difficult times."
Last month, Wheaton spoke on the automotive industry at a Eurofund conference in Dublin, Ireland. Video of that presentation can be seen at http://vimeo.com/7946421.
