What Generative AI Can and Cannot Do for HR

Chris Collins on the importance of the human side of decision making

Human Resource Executive's "What Generative AI Can and Cannot do for HR, According to a Cornell Professor" features commentary from Chris Collins, the ILR School's HR Studies Professor of HR Studies and Director of ILR's MILR program. “Running numbers, benchmarking compensation and aggregating regional pay data are all things AI can do extremely well,” says Collins. “The speed and access to information it provides can be very effective for HR leaders.” However, there is inherent bias related to data that relates to decision-making. “AI is drawing on prior decisions and prior performance data,” he says. “That means it can pull existing biases forward and, in some cases, actually amplify them. AI should be augmenting decisions, not making them. Leaving important people decisions entirely to AI is problematic.”
