A recent CAHRS survey found that two of the top-of-mind issues for HR leaders heading into 2022 were leadership development and succession planning. The renewed emphasis on these topics is not surprising given recent trends related to the pandemic and the challenges companies have been experiencing in attracting and retaining top talent. In particular, companies are rethinking the capabilities that current and future leaders will require in the post-pandemic environment given expected changes in work models. In addition, there remain questions about how leadership development should best be delivered going forward how much of it should remain virtual versus return to in-person programming? And companies are reexamining their succession planning activities in an effort to retain their top talent and brace for a potential wave of retirements following the pandemic.

In this working group, CAHRS Academic Director and William J. Conaty Professor Brad Bell will lead a discussion around how companies are rethinking their leadership development and succession planning activities to address these and other trends. Some of the questions that will guide our discussion include:

What new or adapted capabilities do you expect leaders in your company will need to be effective in the post-pandemic environment? What types of programs and experiences are you using to develop these capabilities?
How have current and predict talent management trends (e.g., Great Resignation, Great Retirement) influenced how you are thinking about and managing succession planning in your company?
How will the design and delivery of leadership development in your company going forward differ from what was the norm before the pandemic?
What other challenges and opportunities related to leadership development and succession planning do you see on the horizon?

Prior to the session, attendees should give some thought to the questions included in the description, so they are prepared to share with the group. We also strongly prefer that participants be on camera during the session to allow for more engaging interaction. If for some reason after you sign up for the working group, something comes up last minute (especially while many of us are working from home), it would be great to get even a last minute e-mail advising us that you cannot attend as we sometimes have a waiting list.
