Our mission is to create and make accessible novel data on the dynamics of the labor markets, we work with research networks and statistical agencies, developing appropriate statistics to inform policy makers, researchers, and simply people seeking knowledge. We emphasize and meet the requirements of stakeholders: users as well as providers, balancing the utility of the data with the confidentiality of the people and businesses whose activities the data describe.

LDI welcomes visitor, Joseph Chien (Australian Bureau of Statistics), to ILR Oct. 19-23

LDI welcomes Chien-Hung (Joseph) Chien, Assistant Director, Analytical Services Branch, Methodology and Data Management Division, Australian Bureau of Statistics. He will be visiting the Labor Dynamics Institute from October 19 - 23.

Joseph Chien’s bio:

Chien-Hung (Joseph) Chien is a PhD candidate in Applied Statistics at the Australian National University.

Chien-Hung (Joseph) began his career as a graduate at the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2001. Prior to starting his PhD, Chien-Hung was a director in the Methodology Division responsible for data integration, access and confidentiality methodology. Before joining the division, he spent three years in the Economics Directorate at the OECD working on global macro simulation models.

His research is analyzing complex labour market dynamics to better understand the micro drivers of productivity. He hopes that his research will shed new insights on productivity drivers and help the Australian public service make better use administrative data.

Some areas of his current research topics include:  

  • Multi-level modelling methods for firm level productivity analysis
  • Semantic modelling methods, and prototype ontology for LEED concepts
  • Network analysis methods including exponential random graph models, Bayesian Network, or econometric methods to distinguish true firm entry/exit from restructuring or re-entry.
  • Using automated deductive reasoning and incorporating uncertainty in the linked outputs.
  • Exploring the use of synthetic data to enhance microdata access.
