XLRI-Cornell Intensive Workshop on Research Quality, Productivity & Inductive Methodology
December 4-8, 2017
XLRI - Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur, India
XLRI and CORNELL UNIVERSITY presents a joint workshop on Research Quality, Research Productivity and Inductive Methodology for Management Researchers in India. The most recent workshop was held December 4-8, 2017. The purpose of this seminar is to help participants increase the quality of their research. This is not a research methodology seminar, which is offered in most institutions. As many are aware there is a need to increase the quality of research and many institutions in India now require their faculty to publish in highly ranked international journals. This course surveys the various determinants of quality in ways that can guide each individual to achieve higher quality outputs.
The workshop is particularly useful for all junior faculty, doctoral students who seek an academic career, and anybody interested in improving the quality of their research. Although the topics (the various determinants of high quality research) are of general interest. We will focus a little more on inductive methodology (mostly qualitative) in some of the sessions. This is largely because research quality using deductive methodologies is well is well understood in India. The workshop is also useful to senior faculty, particularly in helping them mentor junior faculty and their doctoral students. While the course is suitable for students from most management disciplines, the focus on inductive methods, rather than deductive methods, maybe less relevant for students in disciplines that use thse methods, such as economics and finance.
This is an intense residential workshop, requiring considerable advance reading, with whole day sessions as well as evening sessions. Readings are sent to the registered participants in advance of the workshop, and participants are expected to come prepared with questions and comments about the readings. The workshop is conducted seminar style and based on discussion rather than lectures. Participants are assigned as lead discussants during each session and required to provide an overview/summary of the readings for that day.
Areas of Coverage
The workshop covers all of the determinants of high quality research and includes topics such as philosophy of research and paradigms of inquiry, quality criteria, inductive and deductive approaches, developing the research question, the role of passion, the fit between question and methods, writing and presentation, choosing journals, responding to reviewer comments, and the role of community.
The workshop is facilitated by Prof. Sarosh Kuruvilla, Andrew J. Nathanson Family Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University and by Prof. Shubha Patvardhan, Assistant Professor of Management, Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, University of Delaware.
