Insight, Issues & Research: The state and future of higher education

As part of its 70th anniversary celebration, ILR is launching a new webcast series featuring ILR faculty perspectives on pressing work and world issues.

The first installment of the series will be hosted by Kevin F. Hallock, ILR’s Kenneth F. Kahn Dean, and feature the work and insights of labor economist Professor Ronald Ehrenberg, regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on higher education reform and finance.
In this program, Ehrenberg will examine some of the key questions confronting higher education, including:

  • why tuition keeps rising and the future of public higher education
  • disparity in access to higher education and degrees earned
  • the role of technology and its future impact
  • the shift from the social role of higher education and the future of the liberal arts.

Ronald G. Ehrenberg is Cornell’s Irving M. Ives Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Economics, a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow and director of the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute. Ehrenberg is a member of the State University of New York Board of Trustees and a fellow of the Society of Labor Economists, the TIAA-CREF Institute, the American Educational Research Association and the Labor and Employment Relations Association. The Society of Labor Economists gave him its Jacob Mincer Award for lifetime contributions to the economics field. Ehrenberg is the author of "Tuition Rising: Why College Costs So Much" and the co-author of "Modern Labor Economics," which is considered the leading textbook in the field.

This webcast focuses on the potential role of technology to enhance employment for people with disabilities in two ways – job and career path opportunities, and the creation of technology-based tools for facilitating productivity in select job tasks, including access to workplace communication channels.

Representatives from Cornell University, private and government organizations in the technology sector, and related global non-governmental organizations discuss initiatives to increase employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the technology sector, and to increase technology accommodation innovations affording access to the workplace.

HR in the Workplace: Past, Present and Future
