BP Team dominates at North American University Debating Championship

Cornell team shows their hard work and skill against teams from across North America.

From March 6th to 8th, the Cornell British Parliamentary team traveled to the North American University Debating Championship (NAUDC) at Bates College in Maine. Competing in a field of 86 teams from across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, Cornell was represented by two debating pairs and two adjudicators. Across seven intensive preliminary rounds, the teams tackled diverse and complex motions, ranging from the geopolitical implications of capturing Nicolas Maduro to the Sunni doctrine of Ikhtilaf.

The first team, comprised of Eamin Ahmed and Soren Jensen, advanced to the open bracket elimination rounds, winning their quarter-final round and finishing as narrow semi-finalists. A second team, Jayesha Sharma and Michelle Fan, had a strong showing in the novice category and earned a spot as reserves for the Novice Finals. The judges, Barron Ren and Benjamin Vigueras, both "broke" to the elimination rounds, serving as chairs for both the quarter and semi-finals.

Now, the Cornell team is headed back to Ithaca to prepare for their upcoming Novice Nationals tournament.
