Graduate and Law School

Some ILR students may decide to continue their education through a graduate or professional program, or law school. If you're among this group, you'll need to plan your studies and outside activities to help make yourself a competitive applicant. ILR's Office of Career Services and the Office of Student Services and Cornell Career Services (CCS) all offer assistance for current students and alumni in pursuing these options.

Students with an interest in labor and workers' rights are encouraged to look into the Peggy Browning Fund. This fellowship is awarded to students while in law school, but knowing about it as an undergraduate will be helpful as you plan ahead.

Applying to Graduate or Professional School

To view which graduate schools ILR students have attended most recently, please refer to the Law and Graduate Schools section on the Career Outcomes webpage. While some students choose to enroll in a graduate program immediately following their undergraduate experience, many choose to attend graduate or professional school after several years in the work force. In either case, Cornell Career Services provides information on this process and offers services to assist current students and alumni.

Cornell Career Services also provides more detailed information on applying to law school. In addition, each fall, CCS hosts a Graduate School Day and a Law School Day, where Admissions representatives from various graduate and law programs are available to provide guidance on the application process and degree options.

ILR's Office of Student Services provides pre-law advising and assistance with the application process. In addition, we encourage students to take advantage of the resources in the Office of Career Services that will help in exploring jobs (including summer positions) in the legal field and to connect with alumni who practice law.
