Advanced NLLI Coaching Circle

NLLI Discussion

Your NLLI Community Invites You to Join the Inaugural Advanced NLLI Coaching Circle

COVID and the Trump Administration attacks on unions, working people, and democracy itself have raised the crises facing the labor movement to a new level. As leaders, we are being pushed to the limit to serve our members’ health and safety needs, address their economic insecurity, and advocate for good policy all while maneuvering within a precarious democracy. At the same time, crises of racial justice that have beset our country since its founding continue to intensify and pose challenges that our organizations struggle to address.

In the midst of complexity and volatility, we are faced with tremendous opportunity and peril. How do we envision and embark on the transformations – personal, organization, movement-wide, and societal – that are demanded by this moment?

In response to these questions, the NLLI team is pleased to offer the first-ever Advanced NLLI Coaching Circle, which will begin in January 2021.

This program is only open to graduates of the NLLI or its regional sister programs.

NLLI Group Discussion

An exclusively online program, the Advanced Coaching Circle consists of 10 web-based retreats, each one 3.5 hours long and occurring monthly Jan – May and July – November. The curriculum will include tools and strategies for stepping into the demands of this uniquely challenging moment. We will situate our work in an assessment of the crises facing our members and our movement, and will work through tools and strategies to help:

  • Look beyond crisis-coping to clarify and articulate visions for transformative change;
  • Deepen our skills at leading through intense change and complexity;
  • Strengthen our relationships and build the teams we need (e.g., drawing on insights from trauma-informed practice; building relationships in a virtual environment); and
  • Expand our ability to transform the systems of inequality – including how they are articulated through class, race, and gender, among other identities – and move toward a more powerful vision of justice.

Individual and group coaching are an integral part of this offering. Together we will develop and practice a group coaching protocol, and every participant will have the opportunity to be coached in a small group. We will also offer new peer coaching opportunities from within this cohort, which can include participants from across all NLLI and regional programs.

This program will give you a space to step back from the overwhelming list of tasks, to work in dialogue with other labor leaders to develop a vision of the world we want to create coming out of these crises. And new tools and new relationships to bring that world into fruition.

Facilitators:

Kathleen Mulligan, The Worker Institute at Cornell ILR School, and Tony Bennae Richard, The Bennae Group, will lead and facilitate this program.
