Spanish team gathers debaters from all over the country, and wins tournament!
Major success for Cornell team at CHIDO tournament.
On February 7th, the Spanish team held the Campeonato Hispanohablante Universitario de Debate y Oratoria (CHIDO) tournament at Cornell University. Despite harsh weather conditions and constraints, the team was able to maintain a hybrid format for the tournament, featuring teams from Cornell, Colgate, Cal Poly, Rochester, and TEC CEM. Leire Rio, a Cornell debater, paired with Esteban Valle, a debater from Mexico, won the tournament.
In the future, the team hopes to bring back the competition as a yearly tradition that gathers people from all over the Spanish-speaking world, especially Spanish speakers in the United States, to the Cornell Campus. This tournament is just one piece of the Spanish team’s many efforts to strengthen the Spanish debate community in the United States.
The Spanish team is now preparing for the Torneo Rosarista de Debate at the Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá, Colombia. Given their history of competitive results at this tournament, the team is very excited to show off months of hard work.
