The workplace is a source of unlimited research and programmatic opportunities. At ILR, we have chosen a variety of themes related to work and employment upon which to build study, training, education, and practice-oriented initiatives. These activities are facilitated by the centers and institutes highlighted below.

    Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies (CAHRS)

    Sixty-six corporate sponsors, from Aetna, IBM, Lucent Technologies and Merck to Xerox, are partners in this venture to foster excellence in human resource management research, practice, and education.

    Central European Human Resource Education Initiative (CEHREI)

    CEHREI was created in 1991 as an outgrowth of a project to internationalize the ILR Schools Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies (CAHRS).

    Cornell Higher Education Research Institute (CHERI)

    CHERI facilitates interdisciplinary research on higher education. Its affiliated faculty come from 5 different Cornell colleges and span a wide variety of disciplines.

    Employment and Disability Institute (EDI)

    EDI advances knowledge, policies, and practices that enhance the opportunities of people with disabilities in all aspects of life through projects, educational activities, research, publications, and technical assistance.

    Global Labor Institute (GLI)

    The Institute provides a unique venue for unions to work together to strengthen labor's response to the challenges posed by globalization.

    Institute for Community College Development (ICCD)

    ICCD provides educational and professional development opportunities for current or future administrators and faculty members of community colleges and of their peer institutions in the United States and around the world.

    Institute for Workplace Studies (IWS)

    The Institute for Workplace Studies (IWS), located in midtown Manhattan, focuses on issues affecting the workplace—for ILR alumni, faculty, students, and friends.

    Institute for Women and Work (IWW)

    As an applied and academic research and educational resource center, the Institute for Women and Work provides a forum to examine and evaluate the economic, political, social and educational issues that connect women and their work.

    Martin and Laurie Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution (ICR)

    The Institute's mission is to educate practitioners, users, teachers, and students of the field of conflict resolution through the following endeavors: research; collection and dissemination of information; public and private assistance; graduate and undergraduate curriculum development; and, training programs.

    NYS AFL-CIO/Cornell Union Leadership Institute

    The Institute offers a statewide one-year certificate program jointly sponsored by the NYS AFL-CIO, the national AFL-CIO, and Cornell. Instruction combines seminars, fieldwork, and mentoring, and carries 12 units of college credit. Applicants must be nominated by their union.

    R. Brinkley Smithers Institute for Alcohol-Related Workplace Studies

    The Smithers Institute is a non-profit research institute dedicated to advancing the knowledge of alcohol, drug, and health issues in the workplace. The institute works to improve and enhance employee and members assistance initiatives.
