Ronald G. Ehrenberg, the Irving M. Ives Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Economics at Cornell University, is the Director of CHERI. Prior to the creation of CHERI, he served as Cornell's Vice President for Academic Programs, Planning and Budgeting.
About CHERI
CHERI was established in the fall of 1998 to provide a vehicle for interdisciplinary research on higher education. Faculty and administrators affiliated with CHERI come from 5 different Cornell colleges and other academic institutions around the world. CHERI's current research interests include the implications of the growing dispersion of wealth across academic institutions, the growing costs and importance of science to universities, the financial challenges facing public higher education, the changing nature of the faculty, governance in academic institutions, improving PhD programs in the humanities and associated social sciences, improving persistence rates in STEM Field majors, and reducing inequality in access to higher education. Over the years, CHERI has received its core funding from the Atlantic Philanthropies and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and has received supplementary support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Lumina Foundation for Education, and the TIAA-CREF Institute.

In April and May of 2012, CHERI conducted a web- based survey of faculty members we had identified who were serving on, or had served on, boards of trustees of academic institutions to learn about their experiences as trustees. In the Survey section of this site you can find the survey questionnaire as well as the CHERI Working Paper 149 that summarizes what we learned from our study.

There have been two new working papers added this month, both written by Ronald Ehrenberg. Independent Colleges and Universities in a Time of Transition which will be presented at an invited plenary session address at the Council of Independent Colleges 2012 Presidential Institute, Marco Island, Florida, January 5, 2012 is CHERI Working Paper 144; CHERI WP 144, and American Law Schools in a Time of Transition which will be be presented at a "Presidential Session" at the January 2012 Association of American Law Schools' annual meeting in Washington DC is CHERI Working Paper 145; CHERI WP 145.

The Cornell Higher Education Research Institute notes with great sadness the death of Ph.D. student, Ken Whelan on November 5, 2011. Ken was an active member of our research group and had already coauthored one working paper. He was a bright and involved student. He will be missed by all of us.
