Cunningham Facilitates Climate Jobs and Offshore Wind Training

On Saturday, June 5th, the Worker Institute’s Labor Leading on Climate Initiative delivered its latest “Climate Jobs and Offshore Wind (OSW)” training in partnership with Climate Jobs NY.

The Worker Institute Extension Associate Zach Cunningham worked with local partners to deliver the training for roughly 20 staff and member-leaders from the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) and Locals 1199 and 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Participants connected via Zoom from various locations throughout Long Island and New York City.

This training equips unionists with the knowledge and confidence needed to engage in public debates and decision-making on climate change, clean energy, and offshore wind. Participants reflected on their own experiences with climate change, both as community members, and as healthcare and building services workers. They also discussed how developing green energy with strong labor standards is an important step towards building a more just, equitable, and sustainable economy.

To date, well over 100 union members from across New York State have participated in similar trainings. Over the summer months, the Labor Leading on Climate team, in collaboration with Climate Jobs NY and NYS’s labor community, plans to expand the training geographically and to more union locals.
