MicroCapital publishes information on microfinance, SME investing and other forms of impact investing monthly in the MicroCapital Monitor and daily at MicroCapital.org. The agency also acts to prevent and remedy unfair labor practices committed by private sector employers and unions.

Job opportunity: Student will learn about the two primary components of the NLRB attorney position: investigating unfair labor practices and election matters. Student will observe affidavits, elections, and trials if any are scheduled. Student will prepare a mock report on a real-life closed case and make a presentation to management as to whether the NLRA was violated.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations/Commonwealth Employment Relations Board

The Department of Labor Relations (DLR) is the state equivalent of the NLRB. It administers and enforces Massachusetts’ collective bargaining laws. The Commonwealth Employment Relations Board (CERB) is the body within the DLR responsible for adjudicatory matters. The DLR employs attorneys, mediators and arbitrators. The attorneys investigate charges of prohibited practice, representation matters and conduct hearings. The arbitrators hear both interest and grievance arbitrations. The mediators mediate prohibited practice charges, labor contracts and grievances. The CERB decides appeals of hearing officer decisions and dismissals and determines appropriate bargaining units in representation and unit clarification matters. The Chief Counsel to the Board reviews all work-product and litigates appeals of CERB decisions to the state Appeals Court.

Job opportunity: Assisting CERB in analyzing appeals of dismissals of charges; Assisting investigators and hearing officers in drafting and compiling facts of cases; drafting follow-up dismissal letters or complaints. Minimum qualifications: Coursework: Students must have taken and received a passing grade in Labor law and Collective Bargaining and have experience researching and writing legal memoranda. The DLR will not accept any student who does not meet these requirements. Coursework in public sector collective bargaining, employment law, and labor arbitration strongly preferred. Job opportunity: The WISP student(s) will assist in the launch of a new software market. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) research, developing and executing marketing strategies, client service work and product evaluation.
Minimum qualifications: The only qualifications are a bias to action and a desire to learn new things quickly. Public speaking and presentation skills should be polished. No unique computer skills are necessary, although familiarity with online analytics (e.g. Facebook Insights, Adobe Omniture, Google Analytics) may be helpful, as are Excel and Adobe Creative Suite skills. However, these are not required by any means. We can accommodate remote work, and as such, transportation is not necessary. Students should have an interest in one or more of the following: entrepreneurship/venture capital, product management, sales/marketing/communications/PR, consulting.

Minimum qualifications: Student will be job shadowing several HR Managers on the Syracuse Carrier campus to get a first-hand look at what they have learned in the classroom and will not be performing project work during their experience. This experience is not a "job" and is to the sole benefit of the student. The student will not be entitled to wages for the time spent at Carrier. The student will be expected to follow all of Carrier's Policies and Procedures. The student must be currently enrolled in and a full-time student in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. Must have reliable transportation.

Job opportunity: Interns will shadow Field Attorneys and Field Examiners in the Cleveland Regional Office and will be involved in the investigation of unfair labor practice (ULP) cases. Duties may include legal research and writing, assisting professional staff with gathering investigatory evidence, and making recommendations on the merits and remedies in ULP cases. Interns may have the opportunity to observe a representation and/or unfair labor practice hearing(s) held in the Cleveland office, as well as the opportunity to observe representation elections conducted in the field.
Minimum qualifications: This internship is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in law, labor relations and/or government service. Internship candidates must have taken ILRLR 2010/5010: Labor & Employment Law. Personal transportation, as well as housing in Northeast Ohio is required.
