A Successful Recruiting Experience

The ILR Office of Career Services is committed to the success of employers and students throughout the recruitment process. Johanna (Jo) Tuttle, Employer Connections Specialist, is available at ilrcareerrecruiting@cornell.edu to assist employers through the process of recruiting ILR students.

Before

Establish a timeline for recruitment goals.  

Complete the online Interview Date Request form.

Employers may wish to hold on-campus engagement events or information sessions for ILR students in conjunction with on-campus recruiting visits. Events may include:

  • Office Hours
  • Information Sessions
  • Career Workshops
  • Practice Interviews

Look for frequent email messages from Jo Tuttle and keep in contact throughout the process.  

Upload or update job description in Handshake.

Monitor résumé submissions in Handshake.

Indicate “Make Primary” for all students desired (or chosen) for interviews, in Handshake. The number of “primary” candidates should match the total number of interview slots.* In addition, select at least five “alternate” candidates. Selection of alternates will ensure a full interview schedule.  Email students to let them know they are invited to interview, and remind them of any scheduled presentations or information sessions, or any forms they may need to complete prior to their interviews.

Monitor schedule sign-ups in Handshake and connect with Jo Tuttle if the schedule is not as you expected.

During

Provide information about the organization, active postings, and possible career paths. Be prepared to anticipate questions from a student audience.

Provide opportunities for questions and networking.

Provide clear expectations surrounding the recruitment process.  

Contact Jo Tuttle with any changes, questions or concerns.

After

Notify students regarding decisions and next steps in a timely manner. Students rely on the established response dates to make good decisions while considering their options. Employers who adhere to well-established and short timelines impress upon the student that they are truly interested in their candidacy.

Consider establishing a contact person for consistency in communication and developing a personalized relationship with students.

Maintain regular contact with the students who have been extended offers. Since students may have interviews with other employers before their decision deadline, maintaining contact can keep the students interested in opportunities.
