Why did you choose the MILR program?
I chose the MILR program for the blended emphasis on business and social science as both aspects are important to understanding labor policies and the world of work. I was also really impressed by the close industry partnership the ILR school possesses through the Center of Advanced Human Resources Studies. It is a huge benefit to have access to the network of corporate partners, events, and breadth of research being done on real-time and forward looking HR trends.
Favorite part of the MILR Program?
From the start of orientation there has been a real community feel to the program. Everyone makes an effort to develop relationships and look out for one another. The classes are fantastic and being able to learn alongside a diverse and supportive group only adds to the experience.
My favorite class
The core Human Resources Management class is a great introduction to HR strategy. Case studies and group discussions are used to practice and develop the critical thinking skills necessary for crafting effective people strategies that support business objectives. We have also been fortunate to hear insightful and thought provoking guest lectures from two Fortune 100 CHROs in this class.
Favorite part of Ithaca?
The Farmers Market at Steamboat Landing is probably my favorite spot. It's a really great way to start the weekend with tons of fresh food options and a beautiful waterfront. Walking around the botanical gardens and Beebe lake on campus is really nice too.
Advice for a Prospective Student
Plan your time well and use all of your resources! There are tons of interesting classes, student organizations and events to attend. Talking with faculty, the graduate office, and other MILRs will help to stay informed of all the opportunities inside and outside the ILR school. Just as important - make time to have fun with your cohort!
