Work Highlights
  • Drafted questions for the 2010 Academic World Quest competition, an annual international trivia competition held every fall for area high school students.  The competition had six rounds of eight questions, including rounds on history, culture, and current events.  In addition, design one of the eight rounds.
  • Participated in the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program.  Wrote competitive proposals on the resources in Buffalo and Western New York and will have the opportunity to attend professional meetings and cultural outings with international delegations that visit Buffalo during June and July of 2010.
  • Conduct outreach to secure donations to be used for international visitor parting gifts, and prizes for Academic World Quest.   
  • Assisted the Department with administrative tasks. 
  • Worked with the refugee Resettlement Department at IIB with tasks like setting up apartments for incoming refugees.
The Organization

Since 1918, the International Institute of Buffalo has assisted immigrants, refugees, and others who face linguistic and cultural barriers to become self-sufficient, active members of our community. Today, the Institute serves as a dynamic international center, providing critical services to refugees and immigrants and promoting global understanding and connections in Western New York.  In 2008, 10,686 people from all walks of life and many countries around the world benefited from our programs and services, including:

  • 301 refugees, including 161 new arrivals from Burma, Iraq, Iran, and Somalia.
  • 3,579 interpreting and translation clients
  • 2,241 participants in the Model United Nations and other education programs
  • 38 pre-certified victims of Human Trafficking
  • 87 victims of Domestic Violence
  • 710 other legal clients with immigration concerns
  • 85 participants in the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program.
