Executive Master of Human Resource Management

Japan

Where are you from?

I grew up in Stockton, California and lived all over the world after high school. I am currently living in Japan.

Where do you work?

I am an active duty military officer.

How did you decide to come to Cornell for the EMHRM program?

I was looking for a program focused on strategic initiatives to broaden my leadership skills as I progress in my organization.  After some research, the EMHRM program incorporated lessons in diversity and inclusion, talent management, and strategic engagement that would round out my knowledge of the modern HR profession. Additionally, the program’s unique online/on-campus structure promotes peer-to-peer interaction, which solidified my decision to apply.

What are some highlights of the program?

The EMHRM program is comprised of accomplished HR professionals and instructors that capitalizes on knowledge, diversity, and creativity. My class composition featured a wide breadth of experiences, backgrounds, and industries that enhanced the learning of others. The ILR selection committee knew how to pick top talent that cultivated team collaboration.

Describe your experience of working online.

The online format provided the flexibility to balance my professional requirements, while the course structure provided predictability in academic expectations. The online content allowed me to complete assignments when I traveled and the professors were highly responsive. The program itself is not for the faint of heart, so it does require prioritizing personal, professional, and academic responsibilities.

What is some advice for someone who is looking to do the EMHRM program?

Cornell is a place where I developed lifelong friends, colleagues, and mentors. If you are interested, then connect with current/previous EMHRM students on LinkedIn to address specific questions you have.

How has the program helped you in your current role?

Classmates and instructors are a huge professional support system. As the world deals with COVID-19, we share best practices to balance business requirements while prioritizing health and safety in the workforce. They provided a variety of personnel management tools to bridge military and corporate HR strategies.
