Statewide Education

ILR's Institute for Compensation Studies is representing Cornell as part of a New York State Attorney General's Office initiative launched today.

The statewide program called "Directors U" is designed to improve education for nonprofit organization directors.

"Cornell University and our academic partners are eager to work on this exciting initiative," said Harry Katz, ILR's Kenneth F. Kahn Dean and Jack Sheinkman Professor.

“This new and innovative program will help nonprofits educate and train their board members about nuances of sometimes complex nonprofit laws and practices,” he said in an interview today.

"Directors U will help make sure that directors are comfortable in performing critical oversight," Katz said.

Free or minimal cost training will be offered by Directors U through online and in-person trainings, according to the office of Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.

The consortium of academic institutions administering Directors U, in addition to Cornell, includes:

  • Adelphi University, Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership at Adelphi University
  • Baruch College, School of Public Affairs
  • Binghamton University, College of Community and Public Affairs
  • Columbia University, the School of International and Public Affairs
  • The New School, Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy
  • New York University School of Law, National Center on Philanthropy and the Law
  • University at Albany, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy
  • Yale University, Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance

The Attorney General's Office will provide support for the consortium's work and help conduct training programs.
