In our latest episode of “WORK! Exploring the future of work, labor and employment,” Cornell ILR Dean Alex Colvin begins a two-part episode featuring Liz Shuler, secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO. The duo examines the surge of strikes nationwide, the increase of worker activism and the growth of diverse leadership in the unions.

The first woman to be elected the federation’s secretary-treasurer, Shuler has held the post since 2009. Recognizing that the labor movement’s future depends on its outreach, Shuler said the AFL-CIO is working to  broaden the movement by engaging young people. She added that the union’s work to improve the economy for all working people challenges assumptions about the “old fashioned” labor movement.

The second part of the Liz Shuler episode will post later this week.
