ILR in China

An agreement establishing a partnership between  ILR and  Tsinghua University was signed in Beijing earlier this month. Professor Sarosh Kuruvilla and Harry Katz, ILR's Kenneth F. Kahn Dean and Jack Sheinkman Professor, signed the agreement on behalf of ILR and Professor Li Qiang, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences signed on behalf of Tsinghua.

The Beijing visit is a milestone in ILR's involvement in China, they said.

Faculty exchanges, along with undergraduate and graduate student exchanges, are part of the agreement, along with a lecture series (The Cornell-Tsinghua Labor Lecture Series). In the longer term, ILR will help Tsinghua establish a labor studies program.

Katz launched the lecture series during the Tsinghua visit with a talk entitled "Institutional Analysis of Labor-Management Relations: A U.S. Perspective."

Kuruvilla, chair of ILR International Programs, received a grant this year to support the ILR-Tsinghua partnership. The grant was awarded by Cornell's Jeffrey S. Lehman Fund for Scholarly Exchange with China.

While in China this month, Katz and Kuruvilla also lectured at Renmin University in Beijing. Katz spoke on industrial relations' developments in the United States. Kuruvilla talked about changes in global labor relations.
