Celebrating ILR Alums
Bonnie Weinstock '75 and Doug Braunstein '83 are regarded as the best in their fields.
Ms. Weinstock is one of the nation's leading labor and employment arbitrators and mediators; Doug is the head of JP Morgan's Investment Banking business.
Both say they could not have reached this success level without support of family and the benefit of what they learned at the ILR School.
Ms. Weinstock and Braunstein were honored March 26 at the annual Groat & Alpern Awards Celebration in New York City.
Ms. Weinstock received the Judge William B. Groat Award and Braunstein accepted the Jerome Alpern Award.
These are the highest awards bestowed by the ILR School to honor distinguished alumni for professional accomplishments and outstanding service to the ILR School
"This award is humbling beyond words and more precious than I can convey," Ms. Weinstock said. She acknowledged her family and her parents, who taught her to respect those who worked hard and to appreciate the importance of helping others to solve problems.
In delivering his remarks, Braunstein credited the ILR School for helping him to become skilled in problem-solving, people management and negotiation. These are skills he has applied in law school and throughout his career, "skills needed more than ever today."
"ILR stands out as the center of critical thought in advancing the world of work, one of the finest institutions of its kind," Braunstein said.
The award winners also had a special message for ILR alumni in the audience.
Ms. Weinstock called her ILR colleagues and friends the "most hard-working, decent people I've ever known." She challenged them to mentor an ILR student or recent alums during these tough economic times. "We must help recent grads," she said.
Braunstein echoed her request, asking alumni to continue their involvement or to begin their involvement now. He also thanked his wife and family, who allowed him to "spend his precious free time" involved with ILR and Cornell.
The annual Groat & Alpern Awards Celebration drew 350 ILR alumni, faculty, staff and friends. ILR's biggest annual alumni event was held this year for the first time at The Pierre Hotel in New York City.
