A Ban on Salary History

In an attempt to reduce the gender pay gap, some cities and states have enacted “salary privacy” bills. The ban provides candidates a more level playing field but can put employers at a disadvantage when it comes to salary negotiations. Employers can also use applicants’ current salary to cull the candidate pool at both ends of the pay spectrum, said Hassan Enayati, research associate at the Institute for Compensation Studies, School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.
