Avgar Named Associate Dean for Outreach

Associate Professor Ariel Avgar, Ph.D. ’08, has been appointed by Dean Alex Colvin to lead ILR Outreach.

Avgar will oversee ILR Outreach institutes and programs, which impact thousands of people every year. Outreach areas include disability and employment, conflict resolution, worker rights, economic development, union leadership, workplace sexual harassment and employment training for individuals involved with the criminal justice system.

As one of Cornell’s four land-grant colleges, ILR has been committed, since its founding in 1945, to serving as a catalyst for positive workplace change through research, education and teaching. ILR Outreach was known traditionally as the ILR Extension Division.

“One of my priorities is to strengthen the impact and recognition of ILR Outreach,” Colvin said today in announcing Avgar’s appointment to a three-year term. “We have a long and proud tradition of service to New York state, engaging with labor, management and public policy leaders to share our research findings in ways that strengthen communities.”

“I look forward to working with Ariel as ILR meets the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly changing workplace. Ariel is a top-notch scholar who has published extensively in the areas of conflict resolution, and health care labor and employment relations.”

“His commitment to ILR Outreach runs deep. His work with ILR’s Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution has national impact on practitioners and policy, and his teaching to undergraduates and graduate students extends our expertise in policy and practice to the world.”

Avgar said, “I am thrilled to have been appointed by Dean Colvin to this role. Over the course of my time at the ILR School, I have seen first-hand the significant impact of ILR Outreach on a wide range of stakeholders, communities and organizations. ILR’s centers, institutes and state Outreach programs are a vital part of our school’s contribution to research, practice and policy.”

“I am looking forward to working with my colleagues as we continue to build on our tradition of engaging with and contributing to an evolving world of work. I am especially excited about the opportunity to work with Dean Colvin in strengthening and supporting ILR’s vital Outreach mission.”
