Background and Previous Experience

Marcin Graban is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economic History at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (Poland). He received his Ph.D. in 2005 from the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz (Poland), and his thesis subject was the reception of Pope Leon XIII’s encyclical letter Rerum novarum in the United States of America (1891-1919). His scientifc interests are US social and economic history, labor relations history, and industrial civilization. He was the recipient of the following grants and fellowships: 2003 4th International Conference of Ph.D. Students, Miskolc, Hungary; 2004 Kosciuszko Foundation Fellowship, The Catholic University of America, Washington D.C., USA; and 2010 LLP Erasmus: University of Cordoba (Spain) and Karoli Gaspar University in Budapest (Hungary). Current Research at ILR School

During his stay at the ILR School, Cornell Univesity,  Marcin is researching immigrants’ impact on the labor market in the United States: Alien Strikebreakers. The role of immigrant workers on the labor relations changes in the United States of America, 1880-1930. The main goals of the project are to study the role of immigrant workers as strikebreakers, their process of assimilation  to work and the work environment, their entrance into the US labor market, their relations with local societies, and their confrontations with the labor unions.
