ILR Experience: Summer Human Capital Management Analyst, Goldman Sachs President, Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Liaison to Office of Career Services, ILR Student Government Association Vice President of Finance, Order of Omega
Athena, who transferred into the ILR School as a sophomore, had a different career path in mind before taking her first HR class and joining the Society for Human Resource Management. “One of the great things about ILR is that student organizations complement its core curriculum,” she says.

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)

I became acquainted with HR through the introductory course and joined SHRM after they gave a presentation to the class. I became the vice president of communications for SHRM and was on the organization’s executive board. My ability to work in groups, to speak to a large audience, and to effectively communicate with industry professionals all improved by seriving in these roles. I also gained practical experience through SHRM case competitions, which allow you to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to a professional setting.

It was such a great experience to serve as president this past semester after being involved with SHRM since sophomore year. I've become really passionate about human resource management and worked as a summer analyst in the Human Capital Management division of Goldman Sachs, where I will be returning full-time.

The companies I interviewed with were extremely interested in SHRM, because not many schools have an undergraduate chapter. I think my ILR degree, coupled with my SHRM experience, made me a unique applicant for many of the positions I applied for, and it was one of the main reasons I got the internship with Goldman.

Office of Career Services (OCS)

I found my internship through OCS. ILR provides a lot of support for career development and job searches. Through OCS, I participated in resume and cover letter critiques, as well as mock interviews, which made me a more confident interviewee and job applicant. OCS was one of the reasons I got my internship, and ultimately, my job, so I am very grateful.
