Sloan Foundation Initiative
Unique Opportunity to Make New York the State of the Arts
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded Cornell University ILR School a planning grant to explore the establishment of a Sloan Industry Center for Arts and Entertainment. The 26 Sloan Centers comprise a national network of industry-university partnerships for applied research on complex challenges and opportunities facing a variety of industries such as biotechnology, electricity, travel and tourism.
Cornell University ILR has a unique opportunity to include the Arts and Entertainment industries in the Sloan Industry Center portfolio. Activities of the Center will include action research with organizations in arts and entertainment, and will examine linkages with related industries such as cultural tourism.
The Center will also focus on public policy issues, providing data and analytical tools for policy makers and advocates to address the impact of industry changes on corporations, non-profit organizations, workers and artists. Among questions to be examined, for example, is the development and sustainability of a creative workforce in New York State in the arts industries, often characterized by a high proportion of freelance and part time workers.
The terms of the Sloan planning grant require the university raise matching funds from other sources in order to underwrite the planning and subsequent activities of the Center.
