Arts & Entertainment

The arts and entertainment industry, which includes live performance, film, television, radio, new media, museums and cultural institutions, is a primary focus for the WIED group.  A leading component of the New York State economy, the arts and entertainment industries generate nearly $38 billion annually, or about 5% of the state’s private sector revenues.

According to the national organization Americans for the Arts, there are 48,000 arts-centric businesses in New York State employing about 350,000 people.  In addition, cultural resources play a critical role in attracting talent and investment to the state and contribute to the quality of life of its residents.

WIED researchers, along with other Cornell University partners, have joined with industry leaders and other experts to devise economic development strategies. This includes linking the arts and the creative process to economic activities from rural regions and mid-sized upstate cities to the concentrated global hub of media, arts and entertainment in the Big Apple.
