Union Leadership Institute -- July 2009 Seminar in Ithaca, NY
Welcome! We are looking forward to hosting both the graduating class of 2009 and the incoming class of 2010 in Ithaca this July. The following logistics and planning details are provided to help you make arrangements for this week-long seminar. You should also feel free to contact us at any time with any questions.
Anne Sieverding, Program Coordinator. 607-255-4462. acs5@cornell.edu.
Program Dates:
The July program dates are 4:00pm on Sunday July 12th to 12:00 noon Saturday July 18th. If you have a conflict with any of those dates please notify Anne Sieverding immediately. Monday to Friday classes will be held at the ILR Conference Center on Cornell's campus. All materials that you need for class sessions will be provided to you upon your arrival.
Agenda:
A draft of the seminar agenda can be found here. (PDF)
Accommodation:
This year's class will be staying at the Holiday Inn in downtown Ithaca. We have held a room for you at the Holiday Inn at the rate of $139.00 a night for the nights of Sunday July 12 - Friday, July 17.
Please note that you are responsible for finalizing your hotel arrangements. Please call the hotel no later than June 19th and confirm your attendance (group room block code is ILR). You will be asked by the hotel to provide a credit card number to hold your reservation, unless other arrangements have been made by your union sponsor. Please check with your sponsoring union before you call the hotel to find out how payment will be handled. Your sponsor may require you to pay for the hotel and then get reimbursed, or may agree to arrange payments directly with the hotel. You will need to provide these details to the hotel when you call. Hotel details are:
Holiday Inn Ithaca
222 South Cayuga Street
With, NY 14850
Phone: 607-272-1000
Fax: 607-277-1275

Transportation:
Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements to and from Ithaca. Options include:
- Air: Ithaca Airport and Syracuse Airport with shuttle service by reservation
- Bus: Cornell Campus to Campus bus and Greyhound bus
- Driving: Find directions here, and a street map of Ithaca here
- With taxi service available at 607-277-7777
Once you are in Ithaca, buses have been arranged to pick you up at the hotel in the morning and take you to campus (or other events), and to return you to the hotel in the evening. Parking on campus is discouraged and expensive. If you decide to park on campus you will need to stop at one of the parking booths at the entrance of campus to purchase a permit for each day that you park. Parking space is limited and may be a fair distance away from the classroom.
Meals:
Dinner will be provided at the Holiday Inn on Sunday evening. Monday to Friday breakfasts and lunches will be provided on campus. We will have a picnic dinner on Monday evening, a light dinner on the boat cruise on Thursday evening, and a dinner at the senior class graduation on Friday evening. Saturday morning breakfast will be held at the Holiday Inn. The only meals you are responsible for are dinners on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. All other meals are provided.
Planned Activities:
Planned activities include a cruise on Cayuga Lake and a picnic at Taughannock Park. Please come equipped with casual (and rain) attire for these events. Weather in Ithaca can vary from cold and wet to hot and muggy. The boat for the two-hour sunset cruise is large, fully covered, and has comfortable seating and a cash bar. Please note that high heels are highly discouraged for this event. However, you might want to bring your cameras- the scenery is spectacular!
On Tuesday July 14th, The incoming class of 2010 will be going to the Cayuga Nature Center to participate in a team challenge and a ropes course. This provides an opportunity for the class to come together as a team of leaders. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes for this event. Sneakers and gym clothes are appropriate. If you have a physical limitation that prevents you from participating in all the activities, we would still like you to attend and observe- and participate when possible. We guarantee you will have fun! Again, weather in Ithaca in July could be anything (hot and muggy or cool and rainy), so raincoats and insect repellents are a good idea.
For further information, please look over Preparing for your Cayuga Nature Center Visit and the Cayuga Nature Center Release form.
Graduation:
Both classes will participate in a graduation ceremony for the outgoing class of 2009, to be held on Friday, July 17th at 6:00pm, followed by a reception and dinner at 7:30pm. You may want to bring something dressy for the graduation dinner and class photos on this evening. Graduating students are welcome to invite two guests to attend these events. Invitations are available from Anne.
Confirmation:
Please confirm that you will be attending the session in July. Either e-mail or call Anne to confirm that you will be joining us. Please don't hesitate to call call with any questions.
