At closing time workers were forced to leave by the Greene Street exit where they were checked for stolen goods.  Exit doors had to be pulled open into the crowd of frightened workers rather than pushed outward onto the stairs, as the building code directed, and the spiral stairways narrowed at each landing restricting the number of people who could safely stand on the stair.
