Purchasing Policies: Software
The ILR Technology Services (ILRTS) office ensures the licensing, installation and proper functioning of a core suite of software: the Windows operating system, Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access), Bear Access suite of Cornell online services, Symantec AntiVirus, Oracle Calendar and other miscellaneous utility applications. These packages meet the productivity needs of the majority of ILR clients.
Non-standard Applications
We recognize, however, that clients may sometimes require additional software packages for special work-related functions: statistical analysis, graphical design and layout, scanning, etc. In general, ILRTS will install these packages at the client’s request; however, it is very important to contact ILRTS before purchasing software. In most cases the ILRTS department can purchase the software much more cheaply than if an individual department makes the purchase. Second, the ILRTS staff is aware of what applications are compatible with our desktop configurations, as not all applications are. If compatibility is not known we will conduct testing with the requested application prior to installing it on a client’s machine to ensure it is compatible and fits the client’s needs. Third, ILRTS may suggest the use of a more supportable alternative.
ILRTS will not install software applications that are unrelated to ILR School work. This includes, but is not limited to, screen savers, music or file sharing software, drivers/software for non-essential peripherals, etc. ILRTS cannot ensure the proper functioning of these applications with other supported software or that they will not cause future problems on a user’s system.
