Special Announcements: Daylight Saving Time

Please review the below information for updated procedures relating to the change in Daylight Saving Time:

An issue with ILR's Microsoft Windows Update server requires a reboot of all ILR computers to ensure the DST patches are applied.

Before going home today, please restart your PC and leave it turned on (but not logged in) for the weekend.  This will allow any needed updates to download and install over night.  If you are working over the weekend and get a notification that Updates are Ready to be installed, please allow them to be installed and restart your PC.

If you experience problems authenticating to CU services after Sunday, March 11, or receive "Time is out of bounds" errors try restarting your PC.

Or, if you've rebooted multiple times and your clock isn't updating, check your clock's settings to make sure it's set to automatically update for DST.  To do this, right click the clock (in the bottom-right corner) and select Adjust Date/Time.  Click the Time Zone tab, and check the Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes.  If it's not checked, check it and click Ok to close the window.  Within a few minutes, your clock should automatically update.

If the problems persist contact ILR Desktop Support at 255-5484.

Actuate:  Between March 11, 2007 and  April 1, 2007 the time stamp displayed on Actuate reports showing when the report was generated will be one hour later than the actual time the report was generated.  This is because there is no DST patch available for the version of Actuate that Cornell is using.  Data, including time data, in the reports will be correct.

Colts:   There is an update available for Colts PC users.  There is no update for Macs.

Colts PC users will be able to access a new Salsa version updated for Daylight Saving Time (DST) starting at 6am Thursday morning, March 8th.
If you have a personal firewall, you may be prompted to allow the new DST version of Java access through your firewall.  Answer "Yes" to allow access when prompted.

Colts may not initialize after the Salsa download and firewall prompt.  If a problem occurs, close Colts and bring it up again.  It should work.  If not, please contact the CIT helpdesk(5-8990) for assistance, or your local technical consultant.

Everyone should sign into Colts well before next Monday to ensure things go smoothly for the normal biweekly pay period which ends March 14th.

Kerberos Errors:  If you experience problems authenticating to services requiring NetID and password login after Sunday, March 11, please check your computer's system time.  Another indication that your system time is incorrect is the CUWebAuth error "Time is out of bounds".  If the problem appears on Sunday, this is an indication that the required DST patch for your operating system hasn't been installed or properly applied.

Operating System Updates:  Most Windows and Mac computers require an operating system update to accommodate the new Daylight Saving Time period.

Your computer should be all set if ...
(a) it runs Windows XP (SP2), Mac 10.3, or Mac 10.4, and
(b) it is set to allow automatic updates from Microsoft or Apple, and
(c) it has been updated since Feb. 16, 2007

Windows Vista does not need updating.

If your computer does not allow automatic updates, or if it is running an older Windows or Mac OS, you will need to update it manually. Please see http://www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/system/daylight.html

Not updating your computer may result in problems in mid-March to early April and again in late Oct. to early Nov. each year when software and services that interact with your computer's clock are used. (Your computer will still be adjusting for the old Daylight Saving Time period, which began the first Sunday in April and ended the last Sunday in October.)

Oracle Calendar, PDAs & Smart Phones:

Oracle Calendar: Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) applied an upgrade to Oracle Calendar (version 10) last July, which updated time-zone tables to accommodate these changes.

If, however, you created a repeating event, you may have incorrect start times for events that fall between March 11 and April 1, 2007, and for events that fall between October 28 and November 4, 2007. You may find events on your calendar that appear to start one hour later during the date ranges listed above. If so, please correct the start times.

For repeating events that extend into 2008, please check all start times that fall between March 9 and April 2, 2008, and all start times that fall between October 26 and November 2, 2008.

If you have any questions or problems concerning this change please contact the CIT Contact Center at 255-8990 or helpdesk@cornell.edu

PDAs & Smart Phones:  Palm devices, both Smartphones and handhelds, need to be updated so that they reflect the correct time when the new DST changes take effect.  Without the Daylight Saving Time Updates, calendar events and email messages will indicate an hour off the actual time in locations that observe DST.

Visit Palm's website to download the update for both Palm OS and Windows Smart Phones and handhelds.

Additionally, due to a bug in the DST patch for the Oracle Calendar server, those using PDAs or Smartphones who sync wirelessly via the SyncML client will find events appearing one hour later on the hand-held devices than they do on the server or the desktop client during the period of March 8-10, 2007.  Please be aware that if you adjust the event times on your hand-held you will also be changing the event time seen via the regular Oracle Calendar client. Because of this we do not recommend that you attempt to adjust event times on your hand-held during this period.
