Upcoming Conferences:

In the spring of 2009, the Smithers Institute will be holding a national conference to discuss where research on substance abuse in the workplace currently stands. Specifically, this is a follow-up to a conference we held in 2003. We will examine such issues as:

  • Employee/Member Assistance Programs
  • Drug testing
  • New modalities of workplace intervention
  • Labor-management collaboration for the prevention, intervention and treatment of substance abuse problems
  • Workplace risk factors
  • Retirement and substance abuse
  • The role of insurance and implications for healthcare reform for the prevention and treatment of workplace substance abuse
The conference will produce a policy paper which will give academic guidance to future research and policy making. The two-day conference will be comprised of working sessions to gather information which will be the backbone of a policy paper. While difficult, an effort will be made to achieve some consensus around key issues of importance to the workplace. A writing committee will compile the paper and submit it to all participants for approval.
