About the ILR SGA

Purpose

It is our purpose to represent and serve as an advocate for the interests of all undergraduate students within the ILR School.  We shall make it our goal to facilitate and create an intellectual environment that empowers and encourages intellectual growth and individual responsibility.  These goals shall be achieved through continual and diligent communication with our constituents, as well as programming and education.  Further, the SGA shall act as the liaison between the general student body and faculty and administration of NYSSILR.

Background

The SGA is the sole representative body for the undergraduate student population of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.  We directly serve all students and work to promote student interests within the school.  The SGA accomplishes its mission of uniting the student body through events, programming and community service initiatives.

As ILR’s student government organization, we have the ability to involve ourselves in several capacities throughout the school.  For example, the  SGA can address academic issues with the school’s faculty and represent the school in an ambassador role to new students, parents and alumni.

The SGA plans a number of events each year in order to promote pride and community among ILR Students.  Each year, we sponsor school-wide events such as the Welcome Event.  The Welcome Event is a club fair for organizations affiliated with ILR, to expose students to the different extra-curricular activities within ILR.

Financial Support

The SGA is a unique student organization because its membership is comprised solely of ILR Students.  The SGA does receive funding from the Student Assembly Finance Commission (SAFC).  Yet, The ILR administration provides the SGA with significant financial support.

SGA Officials

The Executive Committee is comprised of three elected positions: President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer.  These positions are elected in the Spring and the newly-elected candidates assume their responsibilities the following Fall.  In addition, each undergraduate class has its own elected representative, including the Transfer Class.  All of the Class Representatives are elected in the Spring, except for the Freshmen and Transfer Representatives, who are elected in the fall.

Structure

The SGA Executive Committee will appoint members to non-voting executive positions.  All non-Executive Committee members may apply for these positions.  These liaisons will be accountable for and collaborate with the areas of the ILR School depicted below. This organizational structure will enable the SGA to serve as the student leadership throughout the ILR School.

  • Liaison to Faculty and Staff
  • Liaison to the Dean
  • Community Service Chair
  • Alumni Relations Chair
  • Elections Committee Head

In order to fulfill our purpose, achieve our mission and best serve the student body, the SGA must work together.  In addition to these appointed positions, members of the SGA play a vital role.
