Physicians as Employees: The Represented Employed Physician

Wednesday, October 9, 2013
6:00pm - 8:30pm

This panel will explore models for group representation of physicians, including medical staff societies, societies of attending physicians at medical centers, independent practice associations, affordable care organizations, and traditional labor unions. Topics examined include the legal structures, powers and limits of such groups, their role in protecting physician autonomy, quality practice and patient welfare, and their effectiveness in negotiating compensation and other employment terms and conditions. The panel also will discuss the competing and shared interests of medical labor and management; the tension between the represented physician’s professional autonomy and duty of loyalty; and key provisions in and common disputes arising under collectively bargained physician agreements and other physician group agreements.
