The Cornell Higher Education Research Institute notes with great sadness the death of Ph.D. student, Ken Whelan on November 5, 2011. Ken was an active member of our research group and had already coauthored one working paper. He was a bright and involved student. He will be missed by all of us.

Ronald Ehrenberg has received the H.S Warwick Research Award for Outstanding Published Scholarship from the Council for Advancement and Support of Higher Education (CASE) for his edited volume, "What's Happening to Public Higher Education?" (American Council on Education/Greenwood Press, 2006). This volume is an outgrowth of a 2005 CHERI conference and a paperback edition of the volume will be published by the Johns Hopkins University Press this fall. An article regarding this award can be found on the ILR web page: "Ronald Ehrenberg receives research award from international education association."

Science and the University (University of Wisconsin Press, 2007), which was edited by Paula Stephan (Georgia State University) and Ronald Ehrenberg, was featured in an article in the October 24th issue of Insidehighered.com "Science and the University: Editors discuss themes of new collection of essays on the evolving academic research enterprise." This volume is also an outgrowth of a CHERI research conference.

Cheri has received a 3-year grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to study the factors that influence persistence rates in STEM (science, technical, engineering, and mathematical) field majors. Researchers from Cornell, Binghamton and Colgate Universities will analyze data from administrative data bases at these universities and from several national longitudinal databases and then make recommendations as to how persistence in STEM field majors can be improved. Nationwide persistence rates in STEM field majors are only about 50% which contributes to concerns about our nation's ability to generate an adequate number of scientists and engineers in the years ahead.

"Can't Get Here from There: The Decision to Apply to a Selective Institution " authored by Amanda Griffith and Donna S. Rothstein; has just been added as a new working paper, CHERI WP 100 (PDF, 209 KB).

During 2006, the Cornell Higher Education Research Institute helped to fund a study Survey of Changes in Faculty Retirement Policies 2007 that was conducted by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) of college and university retirement plans. This survey was especially concerned with early retirement incentive plans, phased retirement plans, and health insurance for retirees. Its findings update a similar study conducted by the AAUP in 2000. Ronald G. Ehrenberg, the Director of CHERI, wrote the report summarizing the findings of the earlier survey and was an advisor to the AAUP committee that conducted the most recent survey.

A new working paper, CHERI WP 41 (PDF, 481 KB), "Wealth and the Allocation of Resources at Private Institutions of Higher Education," by Matthew Nagowski, is now available.

The results of CHERI's 2003 survey of economics departments chair regarding the composition of economics department faculty and the changing nature of their teaching engagements is now available in the survey section.

The Role and Effect of Remedial Education in Two Year Collegesf (PDF, 372 KB), a CHERI Conference paper for the October 2003 conference, by Bettinger and Long, is now available.

James Monk's paper on "Increasing Earnings Inequality in Faculty Labor Markets" is the newest working paper, CHERI WP 40 (PDF, 256 KB).

We are pleased to announce the addition of several Cornell students to the CHERI team. Undergraduates Afian Anwar '05 and Jesenka Mrdjenovic '07, and graduate students Albert Yung-Hsu Liu and Joseph Price, are now all research assistants affiliated with CHERI.

CHERI WP 39 (PDF, 251 KB), a working paper by Ronald Ehrenberg exploring the U.S. News and World Report's college ranking system is now available. The paper was prepared for the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education Forum on The Use and Abuse of College Rankings, to be held in November 2003.

With the CHERI conference on the "Complex Community College" less than two months away, conference papers are beginning to be received and are being made available on the conference website. The Romano and the Gill and Leigh papers have already been posted. Remember to frequent this site often to check for more newly uploaded conference papers.

Ehrenberg and Klaff's "Changes in Faculty Composition Within the State University of New York System: 1985 - 2001," CHERI WP 38 (PDF, 500 KB), is now available in the Working Papers section of the CHERI site.

New versions of CHERI WP 25 (PDF, 258 KB) (Groen and White) and CHERI WP 34 (PDF, 214 KB) (Groen) have been uploaded and may be accessed from the CHERI Working Papers section.

The final version of CHERI WP 26 (PDF, 1 MB), "Resident and Nonresident Tuition and Enrollment at Flagship State Universities," by Michael J. Rizzo and Ronald G. Ehrenberg, is now available in the Working Papers section. The paper will be found as a chapter in the forthcoming book, "College Decisions: How Students Actually Make Them and How They Could," Caroline Hoxby ed., to be published by the University of Chicago Press.

A new draft of Matthew Nagowski's "Associate Professor Turnover in American Colleges and Universities," CHERI WP 31 (PDF, 713 KB), has been uploaded to the Working Papers section as well.
