The Worker Institute Hosts Research Roundtable on R&D Workers in France & US

Come participate in a lively discussion of the challenges facing unions in a globalized, high-tech environment.

Date: October 29, 2015
Time: 10:00am - Noon
Location: ILR Conference Center, 6th Fl
16 E. 34th Street, New York, NY 10016

Space is limited. Please RSVP to Stacy Reynolds at sjr29@cornell.edu or 212-340-2809.

Our visiting French research team is based at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, at the labor research institute IDHES/CNRS (Institutions and Historical Dynamics of Economics and Society).  They will present results from two case studies that compare different approaches to these challenges.  Faculty from The Worker Institute will also discuss their current research with professional and technical workers.

In the context of a globalized economy, a growing part of the workforce is dedicated to research and innovation activities. These activities mobilize not only the R&D departments’ researchers, engineers and technicians, but also all the other workers concerned with the development of a new product.

What kinds of labor and industrial relations emerge in those new working environments?  Can organizational structures organized to protect and maintain compensation and workplace standards also contribute to the success of the enterprise in innovating and realizing new product development?

Our French colleagues will present results of an international research project that was completed in 2013, as well as the first findings of an ongoing research project on one of the French leading research facilities, the Synchrotron Soleil, situated in a suburb of Paris.
