Strategic Research

Ranging from undergraduate students to educators learning how to teach the material, three dozen people are expected for the Strategic Corporate Research Summer School June 12-17 at the ILR Conference Center.

Sponsored by ILR and co-sponsored by the AFL-CIO Center for Strategic Research, the program attracts public policy students, investigative journalists, environmental activists and others from diverse backgrounds, said ILR Director of Labor Education Research Kate Bronfenbrenner.

Students learn corporate structure and finance, and union campaign strategies – skills sought by the U.S. labor movement, she said. Bronfenbrenner teaches the program with Glenn W. Perusek, director of the AFL-CIO Center for Strategic Research in Washington, D.C.

The deadline for program registration is May 17.

The course began in 2001. It was developed for graduate students and upper-level undergraduates interested in working with the labor movement after graduation.

Available as a non-credit course or as a 1.5-credit hour undergraduate course, it introduces students to the nature and structure of corporate ownership, finance and power in today's economy, Bronfenbrenner said.

The program provides students with tools to pose and answer basic questions on the operations, structure and industrial relations strategies of corporate America, she said.
