"Marvelous years" remembered at Reunion Weekend
Five words explain why Jaclyn West Hamlin '03 returned to ILR for Reunion Weekend.
"I never wanted to leave," said Hamlin, a lawyer for the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C.
ILR alumni from a span of seven decades returned to campus June for Cornell University and ILR events during Reunion Weekend June 5-8.
Free-lance writer Barbara "Bobbie" Cole Feiden '48 came to ILR via military service.
"I went to school on the G.I. Bill. They were marvelous years," said the White Plains resident.
Jeanne Herron Linderman '53 returns every five years to ILR, where Professor Milton Konvitz influenced her. "I drew on his teaching over the years and still do."
"ILR equipped me in ways I could not have foreseen," said Linderman, now an Episcopal priest in Wilmington, Del.
"All the human relations stuff stuck with me," she said. "We learned the value of listening."
Barry A. Hartstein '73, a labor and employment attorney in Chicago, Ill., said ILR's atmosphere helps build alumni loyalty. "That magic of being a small school within a large university … it's an esprit de corps ... it has not changed in 35 years."
Now president of the ILR Alumni Association Board, Hartstein learned about the school through "happenstance."
A friend was being recruited for Cornell’s gymnastics team. Leafing through university literature, he lingered at the section describing ILR.
"Oh, my gosh, that’s really interesting," he recalls thinking.
"The ILR School gave me a career," Hartstein said. "I've been saying 'thank you' ever since."
