A Look at Show Business

"Daily Show," industry research, union work part of New York City experience

Ten Cornell ILR students will attend a taping of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and tour the NBC studios in Manhattan and Silvercup Studios in Queens in January.

The tours are part of ILR's Winter Intersession Program (WISP), a program that provides students with work-related experiences during winter break.

The Worker Institute's workplace tours give students a chance to learn more about the highly unionized and growing arts and entertainment industry in New York City and its careers, working conditions, human resources and labor relations issues.

John Amman '90, who represents unionized camera operators through his work at IATSE Local 600, has arranged "The Daily Show" taping, a meeting with camera operators and a tour of Silvercup, New York's largest film and television production studio.

Students will also meet with a Daily Show writer who is a member of the Writers Guild of America East.

In addition, students will meet with Worker Institute faculty Lois Gray and Maria Figueroa, and labor attorney Franklin Moss A&S '69 to discuss research and their experiences working in the industry.

This is the fourth year that Worker Institute Senior Associate Ken Margolies '71 MPS '11 organized workplace tours in New York City for ILR students during Cornell's winter break.

Previous tours have included the Metropolitan Opera, the American Museum of Natural History, construction sites, a modular housing factory, ABC News studios, a New York City firehouse and the recently-unionized SoHo store Yellow Rat Bastard.
